About
Dearden Marine
John Dearden moved to the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia
in 1989 and started
Dearden Marine,
building custom boats exclusively in aluminum. The first major project
was the custom Ted Brewer designed sailboat Sandingo
launched in 1993. This was the result of the Cruising World
magazine's survey for the perfect 40 foot cruising sailboat and
a subsequent article by Ted
Brewer in that magazine.
As the market for cruising sailboats declined we focussed on the
design and construction of commercial and pleasure powerboats hulls
in aluminum. This amounted to about 50 hulls in the range from 17
feet to 42 feet.
Our last project was Barefoot,
a 42 foot aluminum cruising cutter designed by Angelo
Lavranos and modified with a hard dodger and a partially balanced
rudder. This design has a truly compound shape with no constant
radii and has plate thicknesses varying from 5/16" at the keel;
1/4" to the waterline and 3/16" topsides. The hull was unpainted
above the waterline and completed to a motor away stage. She was
launched in November last year and is being completed by her owner
in Seattle.
We are currently constructing a Dudley
Dix 43 foot centre cockpit design also modified with a hard
dodger. All metalwork and painting is now complete and we are now
working on the fitting out.
